On Friday's students reinforce academic concepts and skills through games. On this particular Friday, students reinforced how important it is to work cooperatively in groups. They played a game called Broken Circles and the first time around, they could not talk. The teams solved the mystery, but came up with rules for how they could better work together.

We had a special guest speaker this week for our trip to the garden. Mr. Christian Taylor, Pest Control Adviser and Sales Rep for Bayer Crop Science, examined our plants for bug infestation and weed control. Good news: even though some of our plants are being eaten by worms and beetles, the overall production of our crop is doing well. Students learned the difference in identifying the feeding patterns of worms versus beetles. Students also took great interest in learning about how rhizomes in Johnson Grass makes them the trickiest weeds to manage, but we are doing well pulling these pesky weeds by hand weekly. Our plum tree has also gone dormant for the winter. We covered more of the root stock with additional soil to protect it from the harsh winter winds. We are looking forward to an early winter harvest in December!

Students were learning about a little guinea pig named Cuy. We learned that while guinea pigs may be pets here in America, in Portugal, guinea pigs are fried up to eat! The students were fascinated to hear how little Cuy outsmarted a farmer from eating him!
